England captain Shubman Gill scored 587 runs in the first innings with a record double century of England captain Shubman Gill, scoring 77 for three, India kept its upper hand here on Thursday, the second day of the second cricket Test.
Gill shared 203 for the sixth wicket with Ravindra Jadeja (89 runs, 137 balls, 10 fours, a six) and 144 for the seventh wicket with Washington Sundar (42), besides scoring 269 runs in 387 balls with 30 fours and three sixes. Opener Yashasvi Jaiswal also scored 87 runs yesterday.
Gill overtook the great Sunil Gavaskar and Rahul Dravid in terms of the highest personal score by an Indian batsman in England. He also became the first Asian captain to score a double century in England.
In response to this, England scored 77 runs by losing the wickets of openers Jack Croly (19) and Ben Docket (00) and Oli Pope (00) till the end of the day’s play. Akash Deep (two wickets for 36 runs) sent both Docket and Pope to the pavilion.
On the fourth ball of the third over of Akash Deep’s innings, Gill caught a brilliant catch of Docket in the slip while on the next ball, Pope also gave a catch to Lokesh Rahul in the slip.
Crowley also caught Karun Nair in the slip off the slip of Mohammad Siraj (one for 21 runs) while trying to play a shot away from the body. At the end of the day’s play, Harry Brook was playing 30 while Joe Root was playing 18 runs. Both have an unbreakable partnership of 52 runs for the fourth wicket. England’s team is still 510 runs behind India.

Earlier, Gill handed the Pope easy catch in the second over of Josh Tung (two for 119) after tea. The Indian captain stayed at the crease of about eight and a half hours. Spinner Shoaib Bashir (three wickets for 167) followed the Indian innings by dismissing Akash Deep (06) and Mohammad Siraj (08).
However, favorable conditions for batting could not reduce the brightness of Gill’s brilliant double century.
Gill, who expressed his desire to become the best batsman of the series, is moving towards achieving his goal after becoming the first Asian captain to score a double century in England.
Gill’s achievement is also notable because this prestigious series is his first series as Test captain.
After Virat Kohli’s retirement, he batted at number four. Gill ensured that England would not be given a chance to return here like the first Test in Leeds. England’s short bowling strategy was not working and Gill scored runs against Bashir easily.
England then gave a chance to the Doodle Spinners Harry Brook and Joe Root. Gill hit five fours off Brook’s balls while Washington also maintained his grip.
Gill was stuck on 199 runs for some time but then he completed the first double century of his career by bridge for a run towards Fine Leg. His celebration shows how much effort it means to him, which was appreciated by the opposition team and the fans of England. In the last moments of the second season, Root bowled Sundar and gave the team the second success of the day.
Earlier, India started the second day by 310 runs for five wickets and added 109 runs losing one wicket as Jadeja in 25 overs in the morning session.
Most of the time short bowling strategy in the morning session was not effective. Tung achieved the only success of the session with a short ball at the end of the session. Jadeja could not control the bouncing ball and wicketkeeper Jamie Smith caught an easy catch.
Amidst the strong sunlight in Edgbuston, Jadeja started the day by cutting the ball of backfoot punch and Ben Stokes in the cover area.
Gill put his first boundary of the day in the third man area on Chris Woakes. Gill played a reverse sweep against Bashir. It was surprising to see the Indian captain playing this shot. Gil also sweeps Bashir and hit a six on the square leg. Jadeja also proceeded from the crease and sent Bashir’s ball for six runs above Long On. (Language)
