Kerala wicketkeeper-batsman Sanju Samson has almost lost the role of his top order at the hands of Vice-captain Shubman Gill, who is returning to T20 international cricket after a year. In the Kerala Cricket League (KCL), Samson has repeatedly proved the bat of Kochi Blue Tigers with the bat that he is not eligible to be demoted in the Asia Cup and should play only as an opener.
Samson’s brilliant form in KCL is not worth ignoring India. Samson has scored half -centuries on all four occasions, opening for Kochi in KCL 2025. Overall, he has scored 355 runs in the top order in 4 innings and his average is 88.75. It also includes a century made off 42 balls, after which he scored 121 runs in that match. Significantly, his only failure in the current KKR League came when he came to bat at number six and could only score 13 runs off 22 balls.
Sanju has achieved the most success in T20I for India by opening. He has become the only Indian to score three centuries in the smallest format of the game in a calendar year, he has scored all the centuries as an opener. He has scored 512 runs in 14 T20I matches played so far at a strike rate of 182.20 and an average of 39.38. Meanwhile, Gill has played only as an opener in 21 T20 matches played so far. Chief selector Ajit Agarkar also indicated that this Punjab batsman will open in the Asia Cup 2025 as well. He also claimed that Samson is playing in the top order only because Gill and Jaiswal are not in the team.
Samson’s form in KKR, as well as batting at number 5 or 6th, should consider these things before deciding their batting position in the Asia Cup, given their problems and lack of experience. It would be best to make them start innings, although this is very less likely to happen.
